The Root Botanics owner, Kendra, truly believes that the process of making things by hand is part of “getting rooted” and connecting with her ancestors. Hence the “root” part of the name, “Root Botanics”.
Although never one for science or numbers while in school, she found therapy in carefully researching ingredients, deliberately crafting recipes, and turning them into an item that others could use to nourish and cleanse the largest organ of their body. Something to strip away the dirt of the day, and help them get down to their bare “roots”.
“Botanics” comes from her love for all things natural and the super powers found within plants. She vies to create products that harness the powers found in plants for the benefit of her customers.

Short answer:
No.
Long answer:
There has been back and forth in the vegan community regarding palm oil and whether or not it is vegan.
While palm oil contains no animal products or derivatives, unethically sourced palm oil wreaks absolute havoc on the environment and its animals. Because veganism is about animal welfare, and not just about only eating plants, some believe it is vegan, but others do not agree.
Although our soaps contain only RSPO-certified, ethically sourced palm oil, which is a 100% plant-based ingredient, Root Botanics has chosen not to label our soaps as vegan.
Similarly, honey is commonly up for discussion within the vegan community. Some view it as vegan, while others do not.
Soaps containing ingredients such as goats milk, cows milk, etc are (obviously) not vegan.
Please read the ingredients on each bar of soap to determine if they meet your needs.

All vendors are thoroughly vetted to ensure that practices for obtaining ingredients are ethical, and do not result in the death or harm of animals or the environment during harvest. Most vendors possess certifications from credible organizations to confirm that their practices for obtaining materials are ethical.
Root Botanics vows to continually vet their vendors to ensure practices are up to par with their standards.
Root Botanics owner, Kendra, has a large respect for nature as a whole. She generally lives a plant-based lifestyle and has not consumed meat since 2012. As an animal lover and advocate, she ensures that any animal by-products used in her products are ethically sourced. Most animal by-products are sourced locally, with some ingredients even coming from her family’s farm, where animals are solely pets, not food!

We use a variety of fragrance options following IFRA guidelines for safe usage. We do not exceed IFRA guidelines, so most soaps are lightly scented.
Soaps and body butters are scented using either soap-specific fragrance oils, or essential oils. Each product is labeled with its respective ingredients.
However, if your skin is very sensitive, or fragrance just isn’t your jam, we offer an unscented option for all of our soap and body butter products.
-
Soaps are hand-made, hand-poured, and hand-cut. They range in weight from about 4-5 oz.
Soaps will be labeled as 4 oz, but you will often find you are receiving more product!

After performing a patch test, wet your bar of soap, and agitate it against a washing device of your choosing. (Your hands will work fine, but we recommend a good ol’ washcloth, loofah, or exfoliating towel. Check out the accessories section of our shop to purchase a towel!).
Apply the lather to your entire body and gently scrub to wash away dirt and impurities. Rinse completely and revel in the nourishing and moisturizing feeling left on your skin.
Our soaps are crafted to perform with a workable lather that starts off very creamy. If you prefer a more “foamy” lather, vigorously agitate the soap bar against the washcloth of your choosing until the desired lather is achieved.
We recommend moisturizing your skin after each shower. (Body butters will be coming to our shop soon!)
Please note that our products are for external usage only. Do not ingest any product.
-
Root Botanics soaps are designed to have a workable lather that suites everyones preferences.
Initially, the lather starts off as very creamy and soft, with few bubbles. However, the more vigorously you agitate the suds, the foamier and more bubbly it becomes.
To REALLY get the lather going, we suggest purchasing a Soap Saver Bag from our accessories section.

Let your soap dry out between uses by putting your soap on some kind of a soap dish that allows air to circulate around the bar.
A 'proper' soap dish will either raise the bar up for air to circulate from beneath, or contain air holes for drainage of water below the soap. If you store your soap in the alcove built into most shower stalls and tub surrounds, the shower spray will continually soak and rinse away your soap.
You can also use a sisal bag or netted sponge to further extend the soap's lather. Our handmade natural soaps will last longer if you take care of them!
You can also purchase a “soap saver” from our shop. Throw in any small pieces of soap you have to use them up and get the most out of your product.
-
Our soaps usually last for years. Typically, the older a soap is, the harder it becomes, and therefore, the longer it will last when it’s combined with water in the shower.
However, time does affect the intensity of a soap's fragrance. For best fragrance, we recommend that you enjoy your soaps within six months to a year of purchase.
Since we don’t use preservatives in our soaps, remember to protect them from humidity and extremes of heat and cold as this also affects the fragrance longevity.
-
You are responsible for determining what is best for you and your wellbeing. Please read the ingredients list available on the website, and on each soap bar label.
If you've experienced problems with other products, we recommend that you start with our unscented soaps and perform a “patch test” on yourself.
To perform a patch test: Wet a small portion of skin, and your bar of soap. Apply the soap and wait several minutes to see if there is a reaction. If there is no reaction, and you feel comfortable, continue on to full usage. Evaluate before continuing usage, and cease usage if you develop a reaction.
If you are pleased with our unscented soap, but really want to have a scented soap, then try one of our soaps scented with a natural essential oil. If all goes well, perhaps you can then try one of our soaps made with fragrance oils.
We use high quality fragrances specifically formulated for soap and body usage. Additionally, we follow IFRA guidelines for safe recommended usage.
You will have to be the judge on what is best for you. However - as we state clearly on our Unscented Soaps the natural odor of oils, milks and butters may persist. If you cannot tolerate the smell of olive oil or cocoa butter, for example - please do not order our soaps!

The type of soap sold at Root Botanics is called a “cold process” soap. This means it is crafted from scratch and must be cured.
Curing is a process that takes 4-6 weeks at minimum. (Technically, you can use the soap within 24 hours of it being made, but it would essentially melt away very quickly in the warmth of the shower, and we don’t want that for you.)
We do our best to ensure inventory levels are kept up, but out of stock items will be added back as soon as they’re up to our standards and ready for use!
Root Botanics will announce new and restocked products online. Follow our social media or sign up for our email newsletter to stay up to date with any product updates.
